Musselburgh Tips: Captain Dunne

Well handicapped on his old form and at the odds it is worth hedging our bets.

Captain Dunne looks so well handicapped that I cannot leave him out of our staking plan in the 3.35 Musselburgh.

A previous winner of the Epsom Dash off a mark of 105, he looks like a winner in waiting racing off 94. Many punters expected that victory to come at Epsom a fortnight ago, as Captain Dunne was backed into 7/1.

Unfortunately, his jockey was too gung-ho on his mount. Having grabbed the stand’s rail with incredible ease, David Allan understandably tried to make the most of his advantage but he ended up going a stride too fast.

If you watch the video of the race the winner and runner-up were practically last with two furlongs to go, but a dramatic pace collapse saw them scythe through the field, a scenario only possible if the leaders went too fast.

The ground was also a contributing factor; it was much slower than when Captain Dunne won in 2011 and four of his five turf victories have come on good to firm going.

A combination of quicker ground and more conservative race tactics can see Captain Dunne capitalise on the handicapper’s generosity at 20/1 with Coral.
