Beverley Tip: Avertuoso

Should improve plenty for his first run of the season and has a talented apprentice on board.

The betting market in the 9.00 at Beverley seems upside down. All the horses I like are considered outsiders by the bookmakers. Of the bunch Avertuoso is the most exciting.

Once rated 90, he is now racing off 69. He has produced enough clunkers to warrant that fall in the weights, but he also offers glimmers of hope. At the backend of last season he delivered back to back wins, both in impressive style. He slammed the opposition by three and then four lengths.

His seasonal reappearance at Carlisle was encouraging; he was travelling well until he took a false step with two furlongs to go. It looked like the horse finished lame (although nothing was reported by the stewards), so you can forgive him the margin of defeat.

Apprentice Justin Newman takes the ride and is good value for his 7lbs claim. His record for trainer Bryan Smart is 6-24, an impressive 25% strike rate, with a £22.50 profit to £1 stakes. The majority of those wins have come in handicaps rather than apprentice races, proving he can mix it with the more experienced jockeys.

Well drawn in stall two, if on a going day Avertuoso could be over priced.
