Sony Open Golf Tip: Kevin Na

The shackles are off

An exceptional putter and with his maiden victory under his belt he could have a big year.

In his 211th PGA Tour event, Kevin Na finally made it into the winning enclosure, with victory in the JT Shriners Hospitals Open in Las Vegas last October. Many had written him off as a journeyman pro, but aged only 28, I believe the win can launch his career.

Na admitted the maiden triumph has taken a huge weight off his shoulders and he can enjoy the 2012 season without the same burden. Always an exceptional putter, he ranked eighth on tour for strokes gained putting in 2011, it was poor driving that held him back.

The catalyst for change was working with coach Dale Lynch after the US Masters last year.  Na went on to record four top-10s after Augusta and the good news is he will be working full time with Lynch in 2012.

Last week’s Tournament of Champions showcased the potential Na still has. A second round 64 included a back nine of 29 shots. A final finishing position of T12 was respectable but it hinted towards much better things.

This will be his seventh appearance at the Sony Open with two top-five finishes to call upon from 2008 and 2009.  He is a much better player now and that is reflected in his odds, but at 33/1 (Betfred) he still looks good value. This could be the season he turns into a golfing superstar. Back him each way with 1/4 odds for a top five finish.
