10th Jan 2017 | Sony Open

Sony Open Tip: Michael Kim

Sony Open Tip: Michael Kim

Missed the cut last year but shot a second round 65. Started the wraparound season with a T3 at the Safeway Open.

Michael Kim is a player I’ve had my eye on since his exploits on the 2015 Web.com Tour. He missed only four cuts in 24 starts and bagged five top-10s. That was enough to earn promotion to the PGA Tour where he enjoyed a solid, if unspectacular year.

We shouldn’t forget that Kim is still only 23 and retaining his playing rights was a job well done, even though he didn’t manage a single top-10. With a season’s experience under his belt and a first look at all the courses, this could be his breakout year.

Kim rallied well from an opening round of 73, to record a T3 finish at the Safeway Open and so far he has broken 70 in 10/14 rounds of the 2016/17 season.

Kim missed the cut at last year’s Sony Open but after a first round sighter, he shot a 65 on Friday which suggests he can play the course. Another excellent putter he is a good bet at 250/1 with Paddy Power paying 1/5 odds for a top-7 finish.
