Temple Road Sectional Eye-Catcher

Wasn’t suited by the steady gallop on his last start but managed to cover the final 2f in a rapid 21.56s.

Turf Trax have been providing sectional timings on Lingfield’s all-weather track since mid-February and it is a welcome addition for racing enthusiasts.

Sectional timings allow us to understand how a race has developed and whether a race/horse ran too fast, too slowly or at an optimal pace.

The 3.55 Lingfield gives us an opportunity to use these timings to our advantage.

Key Race Sectionals - Lingfield

The key figure to look at is the ‘finishing speed’. Simon Rowlands has written an excellent article espousing the merit of sectionals but in summary anything above a par of 102% means the horse ran too slowly early in the race; anything below 102% means it went off too fast.

Temple Road is the horse that stands out from a sectional point of view. On his last start he covered the first 4f too slowly, only to deliver a telling turn of pace and cover the final 2f in 21.56s.

That is over half a second quicker than any of his rivals managed, including back-to-back winner Volito.

Temple Road’s overall times and TopSpeed ratings are slightly worse, but given a strong pace to follow (he is usually held up) I fancy he could run a much quicker time.
