Royal Ascot Tips: High Standing

Winner of the race in 2009 and seems to be returning to that same level of form.

There is almost certainly going to be a split in the 4.25 Royal Ascot field and this plays a crucial part in our analysis. Pepper Lane and Colonel Mak are the two speediest horses in the field and both are drawn in single figures. The bias could be so significant that I don’t think anything drawn higher than stall 14 can win.

Thankfully, the horse I’ve long fancied for this race is drawn in stall 1. High Standing won the race in 2009 and he seems to be recapturing that level of form for his new trainer.

Not much has gone right for him in 2012 so far. At Doncaster he was racing against a strong pace bias, at Newmarket he was hampered and at Chester he had a terrible draw. However, on his last start at Newmarket we started to see his true form. He came with a rattling late run to finish one-length behind the winner, but 100 yards after the winning post he was in the lead.

When racing at 6f he needs a combination of a strong gallop and a stiff finish so that his extra stamina comes into play. We saw this three years ago, when he was good enough to win a Group 3 contest.

It could be an afternoon to remember for Australian racing fans if Aussie trainer Jeremy Gask bags the second big sprint of the day with High Standing at 14/1 (Paddy Power).
