Britannia Stakes Tip: Folkswood

Britannia Stakes Tip: Folkswood

Charlie Appleby has focused on the turf season in 2016 and Folkswood was impressive on his seasonal reappearance at Newmarket.

Last winter Charlie Appleby farmed the all-weather winning 47 races from January to March 2015 having sent out 138 runners. The winter just gone there’s been a stark change of tactics, the yard had 10 runners during the same period yielding one win.

The change in training schedule was almost certainly formulated to improve results during the summer and early indications are good. Appleby has sent out 18 winners from the start of April at a 28% strike-rate.

One of the many benefactors could be Folkswood. He spent the winter on the sidelines but reaped the benefits when an easy winner of a 3-year-old only handicap at Newmarket in April.

Visually impressive, he also clocked a fast time earning an adjusted speed rating of 99 on good to soft going. The handicapper raised him 9lbs for that win but it is unlikely to be enough for a horse having just his third start. The Britannia Stakes is a difficult race to win but Folkswood has strong claims at 12/1 (William Hill).
