Royal Ascot Tips: Emilio Largo

Ninth in the race last year but has improved since then and will relish the faster surface.

Emilio Largo looks a likely contender for the Buckingham Palace Stakes (5.35 Ascot) having put in an eye-catching display on his last start.

Racing over 6f he was taken of his feet in the early part of the race before staying on better than anything to finish fourth by one length. If the race had been a furlong longer he probably would have won but it served as an excellent prep race for this 7f contest.

In last year’s race Emilio Largo finished ninth but I suspect the soft ground was against him. He is 2/2 when racing over 7f on good to firm ground, conditions he should get if the thunderstorms stay away from Ascot.

It is difficult to say if he’s got a good or bad draw but there are enough prominent runners in low stalls for it not to appear a big disadvantage. At 10/1 (William Hill) he should run a big race.
