Lay of the Day: Battle of Marengo

Battle of Marengo had a hard race in the Derby and Aiden O’Brien doesn’t have a particularly good record in the King Edward VII Stakes (3.05 Ascot).

Only one Derby runner has won the King Edward VII Stakes (3.05 Ascot) in the last ten years and Battle of Marengo might also be feeling the effects of a tough race at Epsom.

Earlier in the week Dawn Approach bounced back from his Derby disappointment but he didn’t have a hard race at Epsom, he was already tailed off before the race developed, whereas Battle of Marengo was in the thick of it from the off.

Aiden O’Brien’s King Edward VII Stakes record:

4th Astrology 8/11 (d)
3rd Packing Tycoon 12/1
4th At First Sight 5/2 (d)
3rd Black Bear Island 9/2 (d)
11th Hail Caesar 50/1
9th Hebridean 9/2
3rd Yellowstone 8/1 (d)
Won Five Dynasties 11/4
6th River Dancer 4/1
(d) Denotes ran in the Derby

In the last 11 renewals of the race Aiden O’Brien has sent out only one winner from nine runners, with several beaten at short prices. Of those that ran in the Derby, none finished higher than third.

Battle of Marengo might be the exception but at even money he doesn’t appeal.
