Pontefract Tip: Sugar Beet

David Probert’s only ride of the day and he has an excellent record for trainer Ron Harris

The second division of the sprint handicap at Pontefract (5.10) is definitely the weaker looking event and Sugar Beet could have a squeak at 16/1 with Victor Chandler.

She put in a career best at Goodwood last time out, winning by 2.75 lengths and in a fast time for the grade. It’s difficult to judge where the improvement has come from, but it was the first time she has raced over five furlongs with cut in the ground; she encounters the same conditions today.

The other clue is the booking of jockey David Probert. Sugar Beet is his only ride of the day, and she must have a chance to be worth making the long journey to Yorkshire. He has by far the best record of all the jockeys Ron Harris uses. He enjoys a 16% strike rate for the trainer, showing level stakes profits of £46.88.
