Lingfield Winter Derby Day Betting

It is the climax of the all-weather season at Lingfield. We preview the big races including the Winter Derby.

2.25 Spring Cup Cl1 7f
Dubawi Gold won this race on the way to a 2000 Guineas second place but there is nothing of his calibre here. Richard Hannon trains the favourite Gusto who won a listed race on his last start as a two-year-old; however 3/1 (Bet365) is quite short for a horse we haven’t seen in 154 days.

Bannock was highly tried as a juvenile winning 3 of his 11 races. This will be his first start over 7f and having looked an out-and-out sprinter the trip might be stretching his stamina. He’s is 5/1 with BetVictor.

Connections rated Kenny Powers good enough to race at Meydan over the winter. The best he managed was a second place in a conditions race but the warm Arabian conditions might mean he is more forward in his development than others.

Verdict: Kenny Powers at 18/1 with BetVictor

2.55 Hever Sprint Stakes Cl1 5f
Some big sprint names take to the track for the first time in months with former Nunthorpe winner Borderlescott 11/2 (BetVictor) in the betting. Injury curtailed his 2011 campaign and he is often a horse that needs several runs to get him into top shape.

Oasis Dancer (7/2 Paddy Power) has won his last two at Lingfield but both were over 6f and he might find a drop to the minimum trip too sharp.

Our racing expert has gone for the outsider Even Stevens at 22/1 and you can read his thoughts here.

Verdict: Even Stevens at 22/1 with Stan James

3.25 Winter Derby (Group 3) Cl1 10f
Premier Loco is prominent in the betting at 6/1 (William Hill), which might raise a few eyebrows considering his optimum trip is a mile. He did however finish runner-up in this race in 2009, only beaten by a short-head.

Cai Shen looks short at 11/2 (BetVictor) considering he is yet to prove himself on an artificial surface having solely raced on the turf.

Junoob and Emerald Wilderness both having winning course and distance form and preference is for the latter who looks over priced at 22/1 with BetVictor.

Verdict: Emerald Wilderness at 22/1 with BetVictor

Emerald Wilderness win the Winter Derby (3.25 Lingfield) 22/1 with BetVictor
