Lingfield Tips: Woolfall Sovereign

Two-time course and distance winner who retains plenty of ability judged on his third place at Southwell, almost overcoming a dreadful draw.

He was a winner for this column seven days ago but I’m happy to take on Taajub in the 4.00 Lingfield. He benefited from racing close to a steady pace and his victory has been overestimated by the market.

The dark horse in the race is Woolfall Sovereign. His course and distance record is 118 and he’s slowly coming back to form after a long absence.

He is 2lbs below his last winning mark and I was particularly taken by his third place at Southwell two starts back.

He had to contend with a dreadful draw, stall 11 tight against the unfavoured stand’s rail, and could never get into the race as the pace-setters came from stalls 1 and 2.

His other two defeats this winter can be forgiven as they came over 6f, a distance he hasn’t won at for over two years.

Returned to his optimal trip at his favourite track he is an excellent bet at 12/1 (Stan James).
