Lingfield Tips: Showboating

Has a good turn of foot and that will be needed in what should be a slowly run race.

The 1.35 at Lingfield is a trappy sort of affair with more than half the field carrying a reasonable chance of victory. I don’t think the pace will be strong, with only Overwhelm a confirmed front runner. This could cause problems for the horses drawn wide, particularly for favourite Lastkingofscotland. He will probably have to come from last to first in a slowly run race, a very difficult task.

Drawn nicely in stall 6, Showboating has been running well in a higher grade recently. Last time out over seven furlongs, his jockey went for an ambitious run up the rail only to be badly hampered. He finished three lengths behind the winner, but would have gone close with a clear run. Importantly he showed a good turn of foot off a slow pace, a similar scenario could unfold today.

Jockey Raul Da Silva takes the ride and the 5lbs claiming apprentice has impressed me this winter. Only yesterday he showed calmness beyond his years to steer Jimmy Ryan to victory after taking a strong bump around the turn. That was his 9th winner from 46 rides in the last two months, taking his strike rate to 19.5%.
