Lingfield Tips: Norville

A series of poor draws has masked his true ability. Has come down the handicap as a result.

Norville is the type of sprinter I really like. He is a tough, straightforward and knows how to win. He has also improved dramatically in the last 12 months, winning six races in 2011.

A three-time course and distance winner, he returns to his favourite venue for the 3.00 at Lingfield. This is his fourth race of the winter and has nothing better than a sixth place for his efforts, but there are reasons to be optimistic.

Firstly, this class 3 handicap is the easiest assignment he’s had. Secondly, he’s dropped 5lbs since the start of his all-weather campaign. Thirdly, and most importantly, he has a good draw.

In his last three outings Norville has been drawn in stalls: 11, 10, 11. For a prominent runner these a dreadful starting positions. If you watch the replay of his last run it is a perfect illustration why. From stall 11 his jockey tried to get a fast start and move over to the inside rail. Unfortunately, he was blocked by a wall of horses and forced wide all race.

Today he is drawn in stall 7 and with some slow starters on the inside he has a much better chance of grabbing the inside rail. If he can stalk the pace set by Fratellino then the race might set up for him at generous odds of 14/1 with Betfred.
