Lingfield Tips: Ask The Guru

Had the misfortune of racing in one of the strongest class 5 handicaps you’ll see all winter. Ran a respectable time down in 7th; enough to win in this grade.

Betting markets are so well educated these days that it’s rare an obvious ‘clock horse’ slips through the net but that has happened with Ask The Guru in the 2.20 Lingfield.

The bare form of his last run looks nothing special, beaten 6.25 lengths in a class 5 handicap, but this all changes when you convert the race into speed figures.

The first two horses home ran exceptionally fast times for the grade, both are unexposed and will eventually turn into 90+ rated sprinters. Take them out of the race and you are left with a class 5 handicap run in a decent time.

Down in seventh place, Ask The Guru ran fast enough to win a ‘normal’ class 5 handicap and that view is supported by the fact Dark Lane (finished 5th beaten 5.75 lengths) won his next start.

Ask The Guru was dropped 4lbs for that performance and is now starting to look reasonably handicapped having struggled early in his career off a mark of 95.

At 20/1 (Betfred) he is a classic case of a horse better than the bare form.
