Leicester Races Tip: Verinco

Has the best of the draw, won on Saturday and is still on the upgrade.

In recent races at Leicester prominent runners have held sway and there are two lively candidates in the 4.45. Verinco and Cape Royal are two horses that like to race prominently but are split by the draw.

Drawn in stall 13, Cape Royal is racing against the stand’s rail and that is a disadvantage. Based on sprint handicaps between 2005 and 2010 there has only been one win from 39 runners occupying the three highest stalls. A high draw is a disadvantage and it will take a great effort for Cape Royal to overcome it.

Verinco in stall five is much better positioned. His jockey has the option of coming up the middle and for a horse with such brilliant gate speed; he should get the best spot. Aged only five, the horse is still improving. He ran a cracker in a higher grade at Musselburgh finishing second, and confirmed his well-being with a comfortable 2.75 length win on Saturday.

Interestingly the horse is entered in the class 2 Scottish Sprint Cup on Saturday. That race is three grades above today’s run, and the fact Bryan Smart rates him that highly suggests he should be good enough to win at Leicester this afternoon.
