Epsom Derby Trends

The Next Sea The Stars?

We look at the profile of the last ten Derby winners and see if any particular trends emerge.

With the race taking place early in a three-year-old’s season, conventional wisdom dictated that stamina was the leading element when looking for Derby candidates. In recent years, breeding has managed to impart speed on stamina laden pedigrees; Sea The Stars, New Approach and Sir Percy have all finished in the top two of the 2000 Guineas.

The old factors don’t hold as much sway as they used to, but it is still interesting to look at the winning past trends.

A sire with stamina
Seven of the last ten Derby winners had a sire with a dosage index higher than 10.5. Although, recent winners Workforce and Sea The Stars had more speedy sires with stamina on the dam side.

2000 Guineas or Dante
Eight of the last ten winners ran in either the 2000 Guineas or the Dante at York.

Winner last time out
Only four of the last ten winners had won beyond a mile in their careers.
