Winter Derby Trial Tips: Decorated Knight
Potentially smart, missed the Arlington Million through injury but ran the fastest closing sectional from last 826 runners at Leopardstown on last start.
On recent form the Winter Derby Trial looks a race between Battalion and Grendisar but both might be worth opposing. Grendisar has struggled to hit the heights of last season and has plenty to prove, meanwhile Battalion has cleaned up in his stead. The worry with Battalion is he’s just short of top class and vulnerable to something a bit special.
That horse could be Decorated Knight. When last sighted, he was a comfortable winner of a Group 3 at Leopardstown and although he races on the Polytrack for the first time he has the right attributes. In Ireland he showed a devastating turn of foot and ran the fastest closing 3f sectional at Leopardstown from the last 826 runners.
A trip to the USA for the Arlington Million went wrong after he injured himself getting out of the box. His fitness needs to be taken on trust but Roger Charlton knows what he is doing and this is a great opportunity to get the 5-year-old qualified for Finals Day.
