Epsom Derby Betting Preview

Carlton House

We preview the runners and riders for the Investec Derby. The highlight of the domestic flat season at 4pm on Saturday.

Having been contested for over 230 years, the Derby is the most prestigious race in the flat calendar. Run over 1m4f at Epsom Downs, the iconic race is designed to find the next superstar of the new generation. Broadcast live on BBC1 we take you through the runners in card order.

Carlton House
1. Carlton House: 9/4
Winner of the Dante, he is owned by the Queen and would be a popular winner.  A bruised fore joint has upset his preparation although connections are playing down the problem.

Castlemorris King
2. Castlemorris King: 100/1
No chance. Races to give the owners a nice day out.

Marhaba Malyoon
3. Marhaba Malyoon: 250/1
Tailed off in his Derby trial he looks comfortably outclassed.

Masked Marvel
4. Masked Marvel: 33/1
Finished behind Genius Beast at Sandown but turned in a much improved effort last time out.  His trainer is hoping for a place at best, and that looks about right.

Memphis Tennessee
5. Memphis Tennessee: 28/1
Well held by Recital on his last run and looks unlikely to turn the form around.

Native Khan
6. Native Khan: 10/1
Beaten 6.5 lengths in the Guineas, that doesn’t seem so bad considering how good Frankel is.  Finished 11 lengths in front of the fourth horse and in an ordinary year that would be applauded. Has come in for strong support.

Ocean War
7. Ocean War: 16/1
A late developer, he has won both races this season. Didn’t have time to take in a trial so very hard to judge his ability. Looked green in his last run so plenty of improvement to be unlocked.

Pisco Sour
8. Pisco Sour: 100/1
Flattered when third in the Dante due to the slow pace of the race. Looks out of his depth.

Pour Moi
9. Pour Moi: 4/1
The best France have to offer at the moment. He was a comfortable winner of a Group 2 in Saint-Cloud and by Montjeu he already has two English Derby winning half-brothers. Has a strong chance.

Recital
10. Recital: 5/1
Won the Derrinstown Stud Stakes, Ireland’s recognised Derby Trial. Looked a quirky individual and a difficult ride. Nonetheless, he won and if Aiden O’Brien can iron out some of the more troublesome behaviour he could be very good.

Seville
11. Seville: 13/2
Runner-up in the Dante he cannot be ruled out as the race was run at a crawl.  The longer trip could see him turn around the form with Carlton House.

Treasure Beach
12. Treasure Beach: 28/1
A narrow margin winner of the Chester Vase, the race didn’t look to be top class and there might be two or three better than him.

Vadamar
13. Vadamar: 16/1
Odds on favourite when finishing 2.5 lengths behind Pour Moi.  Will need to find dramatic improvement from somewhere to turn around the form.
