Chelwood Gate Has Ideal Conditions

Chelwood Gate enjoyed success on the all-weather last winter and has worked himself back into a grade where he can be competitive.

Class 4 handicaps seemed beyond him but he is down to his last winning mark (75) and more importantly is eligible for class 5 handicaps.

His record at this level over a mile at Lingfield is 1313 and he shaped with promise on New Year’s Eve. Held-up in midfield from a wide draw nothing really changed position during the race, the leader set a steady gallop then quickened away from the field.

Chelwood Gate matcheds the winner’s closing sectional but couldn’t make any headway into the accelerating pace and finished third.

A better draw in the 3.20 Lingfield should help him race more handily and if they go a solid gallop, he should pick them off in the home straight at 5/2 (Bet365).
