Camelot 7/2 Derby Favourite

Camelot Impregnable

Camelot is the overwhelming favourite for the Epsom Derby after running out an impressive winner of the Racing Post Trophy.

The defection of Encke meant there were only five runners in the Racing Post Trophy, the smallest field since 2004. The form will be open to criticism but the manner in which Camelot trounced his rivals was impressive. Generally a 12/1 chance before Saturday, he’s now a best price 7/2 with Betfred to win next year’s Epsom Derby.

There is talk of the colt going for the 2000 Guineas where he also heads the betting at 7/1 with Paddy Power. Supporters might prefer him to miss the Newmarket classic, with memories of St. Nicholas Abbey still fresh in the mind. The 2009 Racing Post Trophy winner missed Epsom after Aiden O’Brien admitted training him for the Guineas/Derby double was a mistake.

Camelot’s nearest rival in the betting is Born To Sea, a 20/1 chances with Ladbrokes. A half-brother to Sea The Stars, comparisons to his superstar sibling are inevitable, however he showed enough promise on his debut to warrant attention. A speedy type, the 2000 Guineas looks a likely target, where he is 10/1 (Betfred).
