Bath Tip: Sermons Mount

Improved again for switch of yard. Unlucky not to be seeking a hat-trick of wins after being caught on the line last time out.

The 5.00 at Bath is a good sprint for the grade and it is pleasing to see a decent size field lining up. Being drawn wide isn’t much of a disadvantage and from stall ten Sermons Mount is my selection.

When he was with Mouse Hamilton-Fairley, he was in danger of becoming the unluckiest horse in training. He was a runner up nine times before he finally broke his maiden tag at the 25th time of asking. Although the horse doesn’t like to be out in front for too long, I wouldn’t call him ungenuine.

This summer he moved to Peter Hedger with almost immediate success; on his second run he won at Goodwood in good fashion. Last time out at Folkestone he got involved in a protracted duel for the lead. He won that duel but unfortunately got caught on the line by the fast finishing Efistorm. There is no doubt he would have won if he hadn’t been forced to expend so much energy early on in his race.

He is a previous course and distance winner and this strong travelling horse has more to offer. I expect his new trainer will find the necessary improvement to win this competitive handicap.
