Bath Races Tip: Flowing Cape

Travelled like a winner in his last race but couldn’t quite get up. He still finished six lengths ahead of the third placed horse.

The 3.40 at Bath is a good, if select field of sprinters, with all seven holding claims. Collect Art is a realistic favourite having placed in all of his last seven outings, however he looks held by Flowing Cape.

Although the two have never raced each other, there is strong collateral form through the horse Norville. Collect Art finished a length behind Norville at Windsor, hampering the horse in the process. At Leicester, Flowing Cape managed to get within half a length of Norville. If you ignored weight and took the form literally then Flowing Cape has the edge.

A talented six year old, Flowing Cape perhaps does not do himself justice on course. A record of three wins from 37 starts is not inspiring, but he rarely runs a bad race. The horse needs a strong pace to follow and the drop to 5.5 furlongs should generate it. He is also fortunate to have front runners like Atlantic Beach and Victorian Bounty to aim at.

With a steep uphill finish, Bath can often favour horses who come from off the pace giving Flowing Cape ideal conditions to deliver on his ability.
