Ayr Tip: Midnight Dynamo

Will enjoy the furious gallop and has the stand’s rail to help her. Less exposed than most of her rivals.

It is the start of the Ayr Western Meeting, a three-day festival with the Ayr Gold Cup the feature race on Saturday. The next few days will see pundits obsessing over the draw bias, so let us start early.

The 2.20 has 18 runners going to post, and with such a big field there will almost certainly be a split. Looking at the pace horses, a high draw is preferable. Ridley Didley (15), Senate Majority (14) and Cayman Fox (13) have plenty of early speed between them and should tow along the stand’s side group.

Drawn 18 of 18, Midnight Dynamo potentially has the best draw in the race. Jim Goldie’s four-year-old had a belated start to her career in May, but has since won twice in eight starts. A hold-up horse, she needs a searing gallop to be at her best.

In her last two runs she has been unfortunate, twice posted wide in her races at Musselburgh. The pace held up in both of those races and she could never land a blow. However when she gets a good draw and a good pace she can win, as she proved back in July. At best odds of 14/1 with William Hill she rates a good bet.
