Dubai Gold Cup Tips: Wall Of Fire

Dubai Gold Cup Tips: Wall Of Fire

Unexposed at the trip and displayed devastating finishing burst to win at York and Doncaster last season.

I’ve steered clear of Meydan for most of the winter but I cannot resist a punt on Wall Of Fire in the Dubai Gold Cup (12.50). I’ve always thought he has the potential to be a cup horse this year and although I was thinking more Ascot/Goodwood I want to get aboard before he shows his hand.

His first eye-catching performance was at York in the Melrose Stakes. Despite not travelling with much fluency he flew home in the final 3f. Quickening off a solid gallop, he covered the closing sectional in 35.48s, quicker than anything else in the field by 1.15s.

If you compare his sectional to other races on the card run at a strong gallop, he was only slightly slower than Scottish (35.20s), winner of the Strensall Stakes over 9f and runner-up in the Caulfield Cup and he was quicker than Ebor winner and Melbourne Cup runner-up Heartbreak City (35.74s).

Wall Of Fire confirmed that performance was no fluke by again showing a devastating turn of foot to win the Mallard Stakes at Doncaster, this time he was the faster closer by 0.36s. Although he is only rated 107 his sectionals and overall times are of a smart horse. He is unexposed at the trip, lightly raced and massively overpriced at 16/1.
