Newcastle Tip: Royal Mezyan
Unexposed at the minimum trip on the all-weather. Ran 22nd fastest closing sectional from last 6436 runners at Wolverhampton.
When a horse shows rapid improvement late in its career I’m always sceptical. Was there a speed rating miscalculation, did a tail-wind affect his performance boost or did he simply beat poor horses?
None of this applies to Royal Mezyan, who might be fulfilling the potential he showed as a two-year-old. Connections obviously thought highly of him because he ran in two Group races as a juvenile and started his handicapping career off a mark of 93.
He’s changed hands since then but a combination of a return to 5f and a switch the all-weather seems to have worked wonders.
His career record at the minimum trip is 426800011 but that improves to 011 on the all-weather only and he is potentially still unexposed on the surface.
Last time out he scythed through the field, running a 22.46s closing sectional. That makes him the 22nd fastest closer from the last 6436 runners at the track and allied to a speed rating of 90, he is turning into a useful sprinter.
Already a course and distance winner, he can land the hat-trick in the 3.50 Newcastle.
