Houston Open Latest: Round One

steve stricker

Jimmy Walker leads by two; not enough for outright favouritism as Steve Stricker joins him at the head of the market.

Jimmy Walker shot a course record 63 to lead the Houston Open by two strokes. Playing with a ball that seemed terrified of staying above ground, it dived into the hole at every opportunity. 23 putts, the lowest of the day, is all that Walker needed. The pre-tournament 125/1 chance is now a best price 8/1.

It was a good day for world number two Lee Westwood, his round of four under has seen his odds cut to 9/1. Fellow European, Padraig Harrington also hailed a return to form with a 68, moving him into contention at 18/1.

The bookmakers rate Steve Stricker the biggest danger in the field. Renowned as an excellent putter, the American is four shots off the lead, but favourite to win with most bookmakers. Bet365 stick their neck out and make him 8/1 joint favourite with Walker.
