Houston Open Tips: Dustin Johnson

Not a regular at the Houston Open but fourth in 2013 and good for at least one win per season despite the odd meltdown.

In many years of golf betting I’ve been fortunate enough to avoid a Dustin Johnson implosion but my luck ran out in Doral.

Johnson slumped to a final round 79 which meant even the each-way money went astray. On the plus side I can now join the social-media gang berating the loveable (if somewhat flaky) American.

A bit of harmless chiding is no problem but it slightly ignores the fact that DJ has a good strike rate. He’s won 9 times on tour in 186 starts and has registered at least one victory in each of the last eight seasons, it’s just unfortunate he’s remembered for the numerous heart-breaking defeats.

I’ve still got plenty of time and money to throw Dustin’s way especially on courses where length is a big advantage like in Houston this week.

This tournament hasn’t been a regular stop for Johnson over the years but he finished fourth in 2013 and arrives in decent shape.  He’s only finished outside the top-20 once in a stroke play event this season and he can follow big hitter JB Holmes and score in Texas at 14/1 with Stan James paying 1/4 odds for a top-6 finish.
