Houston Open Tips: Martin Laird

Has won in Texas, has the length for the course and although his form is inconsistent it’s not stopped him winning before.

Martin Laird has an uninspiring record of 57-MC-40-MC at the Shell Houston Open but like recent winners he has the length to prosper at the course.

Five of the last six winners were in the top-70 on tour for driving distance and Laird firmly fits into the category ranked 45th on tour.

The 34-year-old has quietly amassed three wins on tour but can be hard to predict. His triumph at the Texas Open came in a season when he’d yet to finish higher than T34. Back in the state of Texas he could strike again.

So far the Scot is enjoying a typical Martin Laird season with some good results at the Farmers Insurance Open and Northern Trust Open, some average, and some bad (two missed cuts in his last three starts).

Laird has the propensity to be long but wild, a bit like last year’s winner JB Holmes but he knows where the finishing line is and 200/1 (Coral) is generous.
