Houston Open Tips: Hunter Mahan

Defending champion who has five top-11 finishes in his last seven starts at Redstone.

Considering his record at Redstone, Hunter Mahan is a big price to defend his title; in his last seven starts at the Houston Open, he has finished: T11-T5-MC-T6-MC-T8-1.

Yet to miss a cut this season and having finished no lower than T26 in eight events, it would be a shock if he didn’t make the weekend and when he plays all four days, he usually finishes high up the leaderboard.

Hunter Mahan’s strength is his iron play but his putting could make the difference. Last season he ranked 112th for strokes gained putting but his ranking has improved to 16th this year.

His ball striking is so good that he managed to win twice in 2012 without putting particularly well. Now the flat-stick is working, he should be even more competitive. At 16/1 (Stan James) he looks a good bet to retain his title.
