Golf Outsider: Open de France 2012

Our longshots expert has four selections at big prices for this week’s European Tour event.

Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer unsurprisingly head the betting at the Open de France but with Thomas Levet winning last year at around 250/1, it justifies the strategy of going for the outsiders.

Open de France Selections
Anthony Wall is having his best year for a long time with finishes of sixth, fifth and a second place last week at the Irish Open. His price is tempting even before you consider his T10 at Le Golf National last year. A player in-form, he should put in a serious challenge for his second European Tour title.
Recommended Bet: Anthony Wall at 120.0 (Betfair)

Former Open de France Champion Miguel Angel Jimenez is surely worth a look at big odds. The cigar-smoking Spaniard isn’t a spent force quite yet; he has a 7th and 5th place finish this year and defeated Sergio Garcia and Keegan Bradley in the WGC Match Play. He is still capable of adding one or two more titles to his tally.
Recommended Bet: Miguel Angel Jimenez at 160.0 (Betfair)

Time for a big outsider now in the form of Bradley Dredge. I hope that he is inspired by compatriot Jamie Donaldson’s win last week. Another player seemingly typecast as journeyman-pro, Dredge is winless since 2006. The good news is that he posted his best finish since March last weekend, and has nuggets of form in Paris with three top-10 finishes, and a 15th place last year.
Recommended Bet: Bradley Dredge at 430.0 (Betfair)

Finally, I’m going to stick with Richard Green. Although he let us down last week, I think I may have just tipped him a tournament too soon. With four top-10 finishes at Le Golf National, the Australian tends to be a ‘horses for courses’ player. He might have missed the cut last week but isn’t one to give up on yet.
Recommended Bet: Richard Green at 70.0 (Betfair)
