Golf Outsider: Irish Open

The big names of McIlroy and McDowell dominate the betting for the Irish Open but the value is found further down the field.

The Irish Open returns to Carton House for the first time since 2006 and with some big names on the start list there is plenty of value found further down the field.

In the last couple of years Robert Rock has become one of the best players regularly plying his trade on the European Tour. The 36-year-old has won in each of the last two seasons and it wouldn’t be a shock if he bagged another one.

Although his recent form is patchy Rock has a good record at the Irish Open, with two top-10 finishes, included a fifth place when it was last played at Carton House.

The bookmakers seem to have overreacted to Garth Mulroy’s missed cut at the Nordea Masters; it was the first time he failed to make the weekend in 13 events this season. The South African is one of the most consistent players on tour and ranks 10th for scoring average. His all-round skills should be suited to the Montgomerie course at Carton House, as it often provides a stern test.
