Honda Classic Golf Tip: Jim Furyk

Continued his resurgence with a T11 at the Northern Trust Open. Beautiful ball-striker who should relish the challenge.

A 16-time winner on tour, Jim Furyk is a player who always warrants a second look. Priced at 40/1 (Ladbrokes), you might think he is a veteran on the wane but recent results suggest the opposite.

He finished 2011 with four top-15 finishes in seven events and enjoyed a perfect record at the Presidents Cup winning all five of his matches. He has carried that form into 2012 with a T40 at Pebble Beach and a T11 at the Northern Trust Open. He gave himself a chance of victory at Riviera CC with four birdies in the opening six holes but couldn’t sustain the run on the back nine.

Furyk exited in the first round of the WGC Match Play having taken Dustin Johnson to extra holes. There is no shame in that result and the time off has given him a chance to prepare thoroughly for the Honda Classic.

Surprisingly this is the first time he has played PGA National since a T31 in 2007. That should not be a hindrance; its classic layout should suit the 2003 US Open champion. At the odds, he is overpriced for a quality golfer coming back into form.

Back Jim Furyk each way at 40/1 with Ladbrokes who are paying an extra place and go ¼ odds for a top six finish.
