Honda Classic Tips: Tony Finau

A player of huge potential who has slipped off the radar because of a few bad weeks on the greens.

I won’t bother repeating the hype around Tony Finau, having tipped him five times already in his young career, I would just be going over old ground. Instead, I’ll focus on why I think this could be his week.

As discussed in our trends analysis, PGA National is a strong test tee-to-green and that is where Finau’s strength lies. He ranks fourth for driving distance and 16th in strokes gained tee-to-green this season.

The reason why he has not gone close to winning for a few months is the putter. Last week at Riviera he finished T56 with -1.07 strokes gained putting. However, tee-to-green he gained 0.19 strokes on the field, not dissimilar to Sergio Garcia (0.28) and Sang-Moon Bae (0.32), both top-10 finishers.

PGA National is of similar difficulty to Riviera and I’m happy to ignore the short term vagaries of Finau’s putting in favour of his long-game.

The course should suit and at 150/1 (BetVictor) he is a cracking each-way bet.
