York Tips: Trading Leather

Racing Post Trophy flop excusable because of soft ground. Ran Battle Of Marengo (2nd fav for Derby) close on his debut.

Trading Leather might have finished fifth in the Racing Post Trophy but there is still plenty to like about the horse. Before the race Jim Bolger said he was worried about the ground and he was right to be; the going at Doncaster was soft and it contributed to his below-par performance.

If you ignore that run, there are still plenty of positive form lines to latch onto. On his debut at Leopardstown, Trading Leather finished 1.75 lengths behind Battle Of Marengo, current second favourite for the Derby, despite Aiden O’Brien’s colt enjoying the benefit of two previous runs.

At Newmarket in the Autumn Stakes, Trading Leather beat a decent field that included Guineas runner-up Glory Awaits and Aiden O’Brien’s useful Eye Of The Storm.

With no further overnight rain the going at York shouldn’t be riding much slower that ‘good’ and at 6/1 (Bet365) I think Trading Leather can build on the promise he showed as a two-year-old.
