Wolverhampton Tips: Yankee Storm

Capable performer who seems at his best when his headgear is changed.

There isn’t a huge amount to get excited about on a quiet Monday, but Yankee Storm looks overpriced at 16/1 (William Hill) to win the 3.15 Wolverhampton.

On the face of it, his form is very inconsistent but a lot of that is to do with the headgear he wears. It seems a change of headgear only has a very short-term effect; he quickly gets used to it and races lazily again.

The key seems to be backing him when there is a change of headgear.

Racing Post Ratings since Jan 2012

Immediately after change of headgear: 77-63-63-71
Consecutive race in same headgear: 46-63-76-69-60-62-59-44-70-43

This could be a coincidence but Yankee Storm averages an RPR of 68.5 when wearing a new type of headgear, compared to 59.2 when there isn’t a change. At 8-years-old, he might be getting wise to the different racing aides and the constant chopping and changing keeps him on his toes.

It is a theory that could be completely wrong, but at the prices I am willing to take the risk and find out.
