Wolverhampton Tips: Shawkantango

Something of a Southwell specialist but can win at Wolverhampton when the track is riding slow.

The first thing to understand when studying all-weather racing is that the surface isn’t homogeneous, it reacts to the weather and it’s treatment. Although it is often described as ‘standard’, it is anything but.

When the weather is very cold the polytrack surface at Wolverhampton can race a lot slower than normal. The track is harrowed to a greater depth to prevent it from freezing, resulting in the track riding ‘deep’ which produces slower times. The tell-tale sign is the increased amount of kickback, something akin to racing at Southwell.

This plays into the hands of Shawkantango who relishes a deep surface. He is is a four-time winner at Southwell but he has also won at Wolverhampton and could do so again in the 2.35.

The key race is the one at the bottom of the table. Raceform rated the going allowance as 0.33, meaning the track was slowing down runners by 0.33 seconds per furlong. Shawkantango wasn’t outpaced, he usually struggles on a fast surface, and therefore his finishing kick was more effective because he was closer to the leaders.

With similar conditions forecast, Shawkantango could benefit from a slow track and is massively overpriced at 33/1 (Bet365)
