Wolverhampton Tips: Dark Lane

Went off too quick on his last start over course and distance but didn’t fold down the stretch. Better than the bare form.

The Racing Post is an excellent resource for form study and their post-race write-ups are generally accurate. However, they have made a mistake with Dark Lane and that creates some value in the 5.50 Wolverhampton.

On September 8, Dark Lane finished third in what the Racing Post described as: “A moderate handicap, run at no more than a steady pace.”

Unfortunately, the writer was duped into thinking the pace was steady because the two front-runners finished first and third. Using a stopwatch to time the race, I estimate they ran the first 4 furlongs in 47.7 seconds, which is over 1 second quicker than you would expect for the grade.

Pre Tax Profit, the eventual winner, and Dark Lane went off too fast in front and it is to their immense credit that they were able to stay there. Sannibel and Punching tried to track this strong pace but were eventually beaten 11 and 12.5 lengths respectively.

We shouldn’t be surprised that Dark Lane is capable of running such strong fractions as he was rated in the low-80s during his heyday. With this hidden data to hand we have an excellent 9/1 (William Hill) bet.
