Wolverhampton Racing Tips: Cheyenne Red

Been racing over an inadequate 5f recently. Returns to his optimal trip and should get an uncontested lead.

Quite often, there is snobbery concerning low-grade racing. Yes, none of these horses are going to win the Derby but from a betting perspective I have no problem with it. The 4.20 at Wolverhampton is a class 7 handicap, basement grade racing, but it can be profitable if you bear in mind some simple rules.

Horses find themselves in this grade because they are very inconsistent. I would therefore advise against taking any short prices. Accept your horse could run an inexplicably poor race, but make sure you are well rewarded if/when it wins.

Any horse showing a glimmer of form makes the short-list. Much of the field, as is the case here, are running extremely poorly and can be ignored.

The favourite First Class looks the horse to side with but at 9/4, he is far too short. He may have won last time out but he has also lost in this grade, highlighting the inconsistencies in form.

At a much bigger price I’m going for Cheyenne Red (15/2 with William Hill). He is a three-time winner at six furlongs, and took a small handicap three runs ago, although that was back in October.

Recently he has been running over five furlongs at Soutwell. I can understand the logic, he showed his best form on turf with cut in the ground, but five furlongs is on the short side for him.

He showed enough early speed at the minimum trip to suggest when upped to six furlongs he could easily lead. That could prove crucial today as there is an absence of early pace. If he gets a soft lead, returned to his optimal trip, he could make all to win.
