Wolverhampton Tips: Boogangoo

Held off a subsequent class 3 winner despite setting an overly strong pace.

Regular readers will have noticed that I talk much more about sectional timings nowadays, rather than simply relying on final speed figures.

The power of sectionals, espoused by Simon Rowlands, shows us how a time was achieved and provides a much more nuanced approach to form study.

Boogangoo is a classic case in point.

Last time out she made all to win at Wolverhampton and visually she seemed to get an east lead. The Racing Post comments say, ‘she was ideally placed in a steadily run affair and made it four wins at Wolverhampton in only nine visits.’

Sectional timings tell us a different story.

Boogangoo’s 2f finishing speed was 97.1% of the overall speed, much lower than par. This means she was slowing down at the finish having set an overly strong pace in the first 5f of the race.

Boogangoo covered the first 5f in 62.1s, according to my records that is the third fastest 5f sectional in 7f races this autumn, from a sample of 52 races.

Even accounting for class and variances in the speed of the Tapeta surface, i’m struggling to call the race a ‘steadily run affair’.

In Boogangoo we have a horse who set a strong pace but had enough in reserve to fight off the closers, despite the race favouring hold-up horses.

The runner-up has gone onto win a class 3 handicap, which suggests Boogangoo is well capable of defying a penalty in class 5 company.
