Wolverhampton Tip: Steelcut

Has an excellent strike rate at this level and Wolverhampton is his favourite track.

Course specialist Steelcut looks overpriced at 10/1 (Boylesports) in the 6.15 at Wolverhampton. In five visits to the track he has three wins, with a finish no worse than fourth.

Although the seven-year-old is without a win since May, he has spent most of the summer racing in handicaps that are beyond him. Two weeks ago he was well backed on his return to an all-weather claimer but only managed a disappointing fifth.

The bookmakers have been quick to write him off but I’m willing to forgive that last run. He was poorly drawn that day and forced to race three wide around the bend. With a sluggish early pace, he was very keen and struggled to get any cover. The energy he used up during the early part of the race robbed him of his finishing kick. Drawn in stall one, Pat Cosgrave can keep the horse behind the early pace-setters and use his stamina at this finish.
