Wolverhampton Tip: Slatey Hen

Carrying a light weight in a small field is ideal for this diminutive filly.

The 5.10 at Wolverhampton will be a real burn-up with the likes of Novabridge, Decider and Grand Stitch in the race. It should setup for a horse coming from off the pace, ideally suiting Slatey Hen.

Normally I would worry about a horse taking a step up in grade, but not Slatey Hen. She is a tiny horse that couldn’t scare a small pony, as a result she struggles to carry big weights in handicaps. She carried a featherweight 7st-13lbs on her last victory and is much better off lugging low weights in stronger races.

Being only small, she also struggles in big fields where she can be outmuscled. This happened on her last run at Lingfield, after looking threatening turning for home she couldn’t force her way through a diminishing gap.

The style of race at Wolverhampton will play to her strengths. The track is much wider than Lingfield and she only faces seven rivals. The strong pace should collapse creating plenty of gaps for Slatey Hen to sneak through and land the spoils at 9/1 with Coral.
