Wolverhampton Racing Tip: Gritstone

Won on his all-weather debut and still looks unexposed on this surface. He could be about to run up a sequence of wins.

There isn’t a huge amount to get excited about today, but Gritstone looks ahead of the handicapper and can make him pay in the 5.00 at Wolverhampton.

Having only started his season in June and aged only four, there is plenty of scope to improve this horse. Three weeks ago he won on his all-weather debut, running out a comfortable winner off a handicap mark of 70. He has been raised only 5lbs for the win even though he achieved a Topspeed rating of 78. On ratings alone, he looks to be 3lbs ahead of his mark.

Considering that was his first run on the all-weather, I would expect him to improve again. He is with the excellent Richard Fahey, a master at taking handicappers through the ranks. Ultimately this horse is good enough to reach a mark in the high 80s, with possibly a stone’s worth of improvement still in him. Everything else in the race looks thoroughly exposed, so at 5/2 with William Hill I’d get on now before Gritstone shows his hand.
