Wolverhampton Horse Racing Tips: Apache Ridge

His rookie trainer has enjoyed a brilliant year. The favourite looks vulnerable, and this course and distance winner can capitalise.

In the 7.00 at Wolverhampton I’m looking to oppose the favourite Evens And Odds. Although he is the highest rated horse in the race, there are chinks in his armour, and at 11/8 lacks value.

The former Steward’s Cup winner was dropped into claiming company last time out but could only muster a fast finishing fourth. Five furlongs wasn’t his ideal trip but he was horrendously outpaced, to the point of almost being tailed off rounding the bend. At the top of his game he should have easily kept tabs on moderate rivals; that run concerned me.

I’m going to take on the favourite with Apache Ridge. His trainer Keith Dalgleish is having a fine debut season; 35 winners with a 16% strike rate and £40 level stakes profit is an excellent set of numbers. They get even better with Joe Fanning onboard, taking his strike rate to 29% with £58.50 level stakes profit.

The horse finished distressed last time he ran, but has been given plenty of time to get over the problem. Prior to the injury he won a competitive Pontefract handicap and was beaten by a head in a class four race at Windsor. He is probably the second best horse in the race, but with question marks over the favourite he looks worth a punt at 16/1 with Ladbrokes
