Warwick Racing Preview

With Kempton passing a late inspection, our efforts have been concentrated on the live racing at Warwick.

2:30 Warwick Handicap Hurdle Cl2 3m1f
A devilishly difficult staying handicap hurdle with 18 runners; if a minimum 16 horses start then bookies will pay each way bets on the first four places.

Thehillofuisneach is undefeated from two starts and looks the one to beat at 6/1 with Sportingbet. He won over 3 miles at Uttoxeter and the form has been franked with runner-up Theologist going onto score at a higher grade.

Looking at the bigger prices, Volador (25/1 with Stan James) has a chance if returning to form after a 636-day layoff. Two years ago he looked a progressive hurdler, winning a class three handicap at Wincanton.

Mr Jay Dee was a winner last time out and looks overpriced at 50/1 (Blue Square). His winning form is modest but he is in great heart and Lucy Wadham thinks he could improve for the step up in trip.

Selection: Mr Jay Dee (e/w) at 50/1 with Blue Square

3:05 Warwick Novices´ Hurdle Grade 2 Cl1 2m5f
The best race on the card with some exciting novices. Highland Lodge sets the standard, unbeaten in his career. He looks like a chaser already, with his last victory coming over fixed brush hurdles. At 6/5 (Bet365) he is short enough in the betting, with the possibility he finds the track too sharp.

Cotton Mill (9/2 with Coral) is also unbeaten over hurdles but his winning form is in a lowly grade. He could be anything.

Jumps Road (14/1 with Boylesports) takes a big step up in class after winning in testing conditions at Ffos Las. His stable think he could be progressive and he might improve on the better ground.

Selection: Jumps Road at 14/1 with Boylesports

3:40 Warwick Betfred Classic Chase (Handicap) Grade 3 Cl1 3m5f
A wide open staying chase with nothing shorter than 7/1 in the morning betting. Neptune Equester (7/1 with Bet365) was a staying on fifth at Wetherby on Boxing Day. He shaped as if a step up in trip was desperately needed, the further he goes the better he is.

Blazing Bailey (7/1 with Bet365) is proving popular in the market but it is hard to justify the gamble. He was pulled up in the Welsh National and is starting to become disappointing. He will make me look silly and pop up one day but 7/1 doesn’t justify the risk.

On Borrowed Wings (14/1 with Bet365) is the other horse being well backed in the race. This is a big step up in trip as he has never raced beyond 3 miles. Again it is hard to understand the support for the horse.

Selection: Neptune Equester at 7/1 with Bet365
