St Leger Tips: Libertarian

On paper the St Leger (3.50 Doncaster) looks a wide-open race but I have a suspicion there is only one true Group 1 performer in the lineup and that is Libertarian.

Winner of the Dante, he was then slightly unfortunate to finish second in the Derby. The race was run at only a moderate gallop and William Buick found himself too far back when the sprint for home started.

Libertarian finished like a train, making up several lengths on Galileo Rock and the eventual winner Rule of the World but he gave them too much of a head start.

Epsom Derby 2013

Having watched the replay of the race numerous times a couple of things standout. Firstly he seems to lack a little bit of pace. In the Derby his poor position was because he couldn’t go the early gallop, only when his stamina came into play in the last two furlongs did he make any impression on the leaders.

It was exactly the same story in the Dante, he was seventh turning into the home straight before staying on to win.

He is a horse who favours a stamina test and therefore the extra 2.5f of the St Leger should be right up his street.

The one blot on his copybook is a flop in the Irish Derby, but I’m willing to forgive his poor run because he was probably still feeling the effects of Epsom.
