Newmarket Tips: Penitent

Looks overpriced considering he’s never finished outside the top-3 over a mile in the UK.

The 2.20 Newmarket looks a wide-open contest with the top nine runners separated by just 6lbs according to the handicapper. You could therefore make a case for several of these but at the prices Penitent interests me.

He’s a horse who has avoided fast ground all his career so he should be suited by good ground at Newmarket. His record over a mile on turf or polytrack in the UK is: 121123111.

The only time he’s struggled is when racing abroad. His worst two performances this season have come at Longchamp and Leopardstown and maybe he just doesn’t like the travelling.

On his UK form, he certainly has a strong chance. Seven furlongs on fast ground at Doncaster was too sharp for him last time out but he won a Group 2 contest earlier in the season at Sandown over a mile. He is a tough competitor and rates excellent value at 25/1 (Bodog)
