Newmarket Tip: Mac’s Power

Run consistently well in the top sprint handicaps this summer. The favourite is vulnerable having yet to win at six furlongs.

Monsieur Chevalier makes the market in the 3.30 at Newmarket and he has to be opposed. On official ratings he is the won to beat, but this is a horse who has never won over six furlongs.

Pundits will point to his second place in the Golden Jubilee but that was not an especially good Group One contest. He followed that up with a poor effort in the July Cup and he is not a horse to trust.

At the opposite end, Mac’s Power is a horse you could hang your hat on. He is extremely consistent, proven over six furlongs and arguably unlucky not to have won a big sprint this year.

Drawn on the wrong side in the Wokingham, he still won his race but could not match Deacon Blues who raced with the main group. Again at Ascot his luck deserted him when finishing third behind Noble Citizen, this time forced to race on the slowest part of the track. Bad luck came in threes, when third in the Steward’s Cup behind the smart Hoof It.

A combination of bad luck and smart horses in the case of Deacon Blues and Hoof It has scuppered him. The aforementioned horses are bordering Group One class, by proxy Mac’s Power is good enough to beat Monsieur Chevalier.
