Newbury Tips: Magnanimity

The 3.10 Newbury is another fascinating renewal of the Hennessy Gold Cup and Michael O’Leary holds the best chances with his two runners First Lieutenant and Magnanimity.

First Lieutenant should get better the further he goes and could be a lively contender for the Cheltenham Gold Cup (20/1 Sportingbet) and may have a big run this afternoon. However, the Hennessy is a handicap and at the weights Magnanimity looks the better bet.

Looking at his performances last season it seems the horse was suffering from a breathing problem, his good run at Fairyhouse was achieved with a tongue-strap. The breathing aide has been retained and it enabled him to produce two big runs this season. He’s hit RPRs of 152 and 147 on his last two starts, suggesting he is back to his best. If anything, the performances need upgrading as they were achieved at distances short of his optimum.

Having dropped 7lbs from his peak, Magnanimity looks well handicapped now he has rediscovered his form. His yard are also going great, with Dessie Hughes enjoying a 23% strike rate in November. At 16/1 he looks a great each-way bet with Bet365 paying ¼ odds for a top-5 finish.
