Newbury Tip: Bothy

Several potentially well handicapped horses in the field. This one stands out because he already has Grade form in the book.

The rearranged Totesport Trophy races at 1.50 at Newbury with the added bonus of being shown live on Channel 4. One of the most competitive handicaps outside of Cheltenham there is often a well handicapped horse lurking towards the bottom of the weights. Six of the last eight winners have carried less than 11lbs to victory.

If we concentrate in that area Bothy stands out. We can ignore his last run in a Southwell bumper as he probably didn’t handle the surface, but his run before that was excellent. The Brian Ellison charge got to within a quarter of length of beating the classy Menorah. Although he was off a feather weight mark that day he still ran to a Grade 3 level, if not better.

Still lightly raced over hurdles he has three wins from five runs and looks unexposed. With Victor Chandler going 4 places for only 15 runners it’s worth betting with them.
